FOG’s mandate includes engagement with other groups working to protect and conserve the Gatineau River. We were proud to co-sponsor with STO Union, a celebration of the Tenàgàdino Zibi or Gatineau River organized by the Tenagadino Alliance as part of this year’s Upper Gatineau Whitewater Festival. The objective was to bring together various groups, including members of Kitigan Zibi (Natural Resources Department and others)
along with Tenàgàdino Alliance, FOG, and hundreds of avid paddlers attending the festival.
It was an exhilarating experience to raft the fierce and precious waters that snake and roar through Anishinabeg de Kitigan Zibi lands.
Our rafts, expertly guided by Coop Matawin Adventures, jostled on crests of waves as outcrops of gneiss and granite bobbed by. We passed forests of sugar maple, yellow birch, white pine, hemlock, and spruce. On one of the rapids our boat dropped like a broken elevator from high waves. After our thrilling ride, the day flowed into a joyful feast, including Algonquin Anishinaabe song, dance, and drumming reminding us that the Gatineau River connects us all. Here’s a short video of the event produced by the Tenágádino Alliance.
